June 13, 2001. 920 from Springer, 1247 to Katahdin. Rufus packing buns in Shenandoah National Park.

It’s a god-awful hot day today, as if Mother Nature waited for us to leave the comforts of the park before blasting the furnace. Just to make it interesting, she adds humidity too. Our plan is to re-supply, then get back on the trail, but it’s difficult because Front Royal isn’t a trail town. Instead, it is laid out for tourists visiting the Shenandoah National Park by car, so the services are spread out all over town.

We pick up our mail drops from the post office and start towards the closest grocery store, a mile away under the blazing sun. One bank’s lighted sign puts the temperature at 98 degrees, and the concrete world we’ve stepped into offers no protection. Halfway to the supermarket we spy a Dairy Queen and head towards the air-conditioning. Just then, Othra walks out, holding a rapidly melting ice cream cone.

“Hey, guys! You decide to aqua blaze after all?” Othra asks.

“We weren’t really planning on it. Who all is going?” I ask.

“Got a whole bunch of people, so it should only run about $50 a person. We’re all splitting a motel room tonight and canoeing in the morning. You guys in?”
